Teach Me To Fish – Chestnut Ridge Park

June 27 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

REGISTER HERE

Each year, the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and the Department of Environmental Conservation work together to provide two FREE “Teach Me to Fish” family fishing clinics.   A fishing license is NOT required to participate in either of these clinics.   Anyone can take part in the clinics, but only kids aged 15 and under can register to win prizes.

Many dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers donate their time to Teach Me to Fish clinics. Among those are five members of the NYS Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame and the Department of Environmental Conservations’ Aquatic Biologist.

When participants arrive, they are checked in at our registration table and given a punch card with five learning stations listed on it.   The learning stations include:

  • Fish Identification & Handling
  • Casting
  • Plastic Baits
  • Knot Tying
  • Where to Fish

At the completion of each learning station, the appropriate portion of the card is punched, and the participant moves on to the next station.   When all stations have been visited, each participant is provided with worms for bait and may start fishing.   Loaner rod & reels are available for participants to use, or they may use their own equipment if they prefer.

Kids 15 and under are encouraged to bring the fish that they catch to the measuring table where the name of the angler, the species of fish, and length of fish is recorded.   All registered youth are awarded a fishing tackle prize at the end of the event, and the youth with the biggest fish caught and most fish caught are recognized.

CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE PARENT OR ADULT REPRESENTATIVE DESIGNATED BY THE PARENT.
