Here are updates since June 26 affecting Erie County Federation members (and many others) covering not only legislation on a New York State level but also SCOTUS decision affecting our 2A rights. 

A late update: H.R. 615 has passed in the US House or Representatives and is being sent to the US Senate. This proposed bill protects our continued ability to use lead sinkers and ammo on Federal Lands and Waters in our recreational pursuits.

New York Assembly Bill 7555

Status

Completed Legislative Action Spectrum: Partisan Bill (Democrat 2-0) Status: Passed on June 28 2024 – 100% progression Action: 2024-06-28 – signed chap.123 Takes effect immediately

Summary

Relates to the dangers to safety and health and the creation of a public nuisance caused by the sale, manufacturing, distribution, importing, and marketing of firearms.

Redefines definitions of Firearms, Ammunition, Parts and Accessories.

New York Senate Bill 8644

Status

Completed Legislative Action Spectrum: Partisan Bill (Democrat 1-0) Status: Passed on June 28 2024 – 100% progression Action: 2024-06-28 – SIGNED CHAP.158 Portions take effect immediately, portions take effect August 1, 2025.

Summary

Requires that a person hold a license, tag or privilege in an electronic or other acceptable format pursuant to regulations for the hunting of deer and bears.

Allows use of mobile phone stored license. Requires cell phone immediate registration of kill upon harvesting beginning in 2025.

New York Senate Bill 9760

Directs that statewide resources and information relating to safe storage of firearms, child access prevention and firearm violence prevention and information on county and local specific laws and regulations related to child access prevention and the safe storage of firearms shall be provided to individuals at the time of issuance of a firearm license; directs the commissioner of the division of criminal justice services to develop and implement a public awareness campaign on the safe storage of firearms, rifles and shotguns and child access and prevention.
